I love this piece. I had this same experience with a client of mine, my first proper client (as you say). When he saw his website, he called over the phone and was literally pouring blessings on me. He couldn't stop gushing for days.

I found out that day why I really wanted to set up my own web design business - not so much to make money(which I thought was the main aim), but to touch other people's lives and other people's business and leave them in better shape than I found them.

Brilliant piece.

Will that effort by the Co. mentioned above be accepted by the Government if it isn't going to benefit them in any way?? When really do you think these connectivity developments would be gaining grounds...
People in Nigeria are relatively against technological developments, if not Connectivity should have been something cheap at this stage in our countrys life.

I loved this article. I used to think templates were UGH. But then I realized time is money. So I had to rethink the entire way that I do my design. I use Joomla open source software to design my websites. There are tons of templates and plugins that use can use to customize your site and most are free. I think its possible to take a template and really do alot with it. I prefer starting with a decent "basic" template (lots of white space) that i can manipulate with out having to worry about actually making the code and CSS. That takes hours and days to do. Buy that time I could have outsourced the design to India and got it back already...lol.

But I digress.

Loved the post. I Noticed you stopped by neck of the woods earlier today. The site is a work in progress, as its like 4 days old. LOL. So I appreciate the sign up! Kudos and much success!

Yes, it's true that internet use isn't all that widespread in Nigeria but efforts are underway to change that. Google, HSBC and Liberty Global have started a $700 million project to improve connectivity and at a lower cost to users: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1841175,00.html

This is only one of many projects in development to improve internet accessibility in Africa. I understand how your friend feels but he should look at it this way: When widespread internet access is available in Nigeria (and it's coming sooner than we think), more people will want websites than there are professionals able to supply them. More demand with limited supply = higher prices. Your friend's customers will be glad they got him when he was still relatively cheap. Besides, having a website can only improve the image of any business - especially where owning one isn't all that commonplace. People will see the business as being professional and this in turn would increase its perceived value. And as I'm sure you know, perception is everything when it comes to business.

i was wondering about the 'customers' in Nigeria and except for the really 'big boys', an internet exposure in this country right now is little less than a glorified complementary card. I'd thought Wai was someplace in Lagos, guess our experience doesn't apply to you. After a while my friend who does web development felt like a fraud since his customers weren't really benefiting in a vital way from their web presence.

i guess practice and study increases one's ability to 'get a good picture' and never forget, you can tweak and enhance with software.
